Welcome to Term 2

Welcome back to term 2!  We have a fun filled term coming up full of celebrations and hands on learning.  Please take a look at our curriculum for this term below and continue to support you child with their understand of these areas of learning at home.  We really appreciate all you do with your children at home.  It makes such a big difference to their understanding and capability in school.

We have some exciting areas of learning coming up in Term 2.

Please also refer to the termly newsletter for further information.  If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us on the Year 2 email account - year2@kingsnorth.kent.sch.uk.

MATHS

In Maths, we follow the White Rose scheme of learning.  For the first few weeks, we will be continuing our learning of calculations, focusing mainly on addition and subtractions.  We will also begin to transfer our knowledge to money, starting to think about counting, comparing amounts and finding out how much change.  Any practise of this at home would be greatly appreciated; if children are familiar with money through using it in a real context we find they become much more confident in class.

Children would continue to benefit from regularly practising their 10, 5s and 2 times tables.

To support your child, please continue to play mental maths games on apps such as:

White Rose 1-min Maths

ENGLISH

Writing:

In English, we follow the Read, Write, Inc scheme of learning.  We will be focusing in particular on ensuring work is demarcated with full stops and capital letters and that sentences are coherent.

Attached below is a list of common exception words as well as high-frequency words. We would really appreciate your support in helping your child practise spelling these words so that they are confident in both reading and writing them independently.

The video below will help you to understand how to say each of the sounds from Set 1 to Set 3. It would be really beneficial for you to watch this to support you with your child's learning.

For writing we will continue to make our own books through 'Writing for Pleasure'. This term, we will be learning about writing instructions and memoirs.

We are often asked how you can support your child with writing at home. Here are a few ideas that will support your child in both their creativity and in practising the structure and content of various genres;

- Write a letter or postcard to someone

- Write a recipe or instructions for how to do something

- Keep a diary, updating it regularly

- Write a familiar story in your own words *maybe even change some of the elements i.e. character, setting etc.

Reading:

We consistently review your child's reading level and adjust this accordingly. Please listen to your child read daily and ask them questions about what they are reading. Below are some links to online books which you may find helpful.

RE:

In RE this term our Big Question is, ‘How should we care for the world and for others, and why does it matter?'  We will be studying different faiths and beliefs as we explore this as a class.

SCIENCE:

I wonder why living things live in different habitats around the world.
This term we will be investigating different habitats around the world and what living things thrive within them.  We will explore why they thrive best in certain environments and compare and contrast them to our own habitats.

PE:

In PE, we follow the TLG scheme of learning. Below is a yearly overview of the topics your child will cover in Year 2.

Our unit across this term will be Dance - Fairytales.  Our weekly PE session will be on a Tuesday and Friday afternoon outside (weather permitting). Your child can wear their PE kit throughout the day.

Please ensure your child is wearing the appropriate PE kit for the weather.

We follow Jigsaw for our PSHE learning.  This term we will be focusing on celebrating differences.  We will explore how each of us are different and why and how we are different, including gender, race and interests.  We will be celebrating these differences and how to show respect to one another.

Geography:

Oceans and continents
Our Geography lessons this term will be about oceans and continents of the world.  We will be finding out about where children have been and/or want to visit.  We will also be linking this with where food is grown and harvested.
