Art and D/T

Curriculum Intent: Art

“Creative people are curious, flexible, persistent and independent, with a tremendous spirit of adventure and a love of play.” – Henri Matisse.

Art, craft and design are essential for the rounded education we want every child to experience; they embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. Kingsnorth recognises this and ensures all pupils will have the opportunity to develop their skills and confidence to express their own thoughts and feelings through art. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. Art is a subject that can help us to understand and give meaning to the world in which we live. Art effects everyone’s lives and as such is an extremely valuable subject.

We use a wide range of media to produce 3D sculptures, printmaking, drawings and paintings. Most importantly, however, children will also develop an appreciation for the art of other people, cultures and eras. Involvement in the arts is associated with gains in maths, reading, cognitive ability, critical thinking, and verbal skill. We actively encourage students of all abilities to participate in Art and fulfil their potential to design, create and produce Art of the highest standard. Academic ability is no boundary where Art is concerned; only a keen imagination is required.

Aims

The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:

  1.  Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  2.  Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  3.  Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  4.  Know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.
  5. Think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design.
